  1. A saiga is an ANTELOPE Saiga tartarica of 
  2. East European and West Asian steppes and 
  3. deserts. Buff-coloured, whitish in winter, it 
  4. stands 75cm (30inches at the shoulder), with 
  5. a body about 1½m (5ft long). Its nose is 
  6. unusually large and swollen, an adaptation 
  7. which may help warm and moisten the air 
  8. inhaled, and keep out the desert dust.
